Sweeney Lane Apartments

  • Daly City, California
  • MidPen Housing

In response to the tremendous need for affordable housing in San Mateo County, a county tied at first as the most expensive housing market in the entire nation, Sweeney Lane Apartments is the result of a visionary partnership between MidPen Housing and the City of Daly City.

On a vacant site formerly occupied by an auto dealership, Sweeney Lane Apartments is a new, mixed-use, transit-oriented affordable workforce housing project that is a catalyst for the City's "Grand Boulevard Initiative," a revitalization effort along Mission Street (or El Camino Real as it's named in neighboring cities).

The affordable apartment community will help to transform Mission Street into a pedestrian-friendly corridor with 2,200 square feet of retail on the ground floor and 52 affordable apartments (in combination of one-, two- and three-bedroom units) serving individuals and families "earning up to 60 percent of Area Media Income, which is $71,760 for a five-person household."

In partnership with a network of service providers, MidPen will operate a number of educational, vocational development, and health and wellness programs onsite. For example, the community's onsite classroom will offer youth residents an education-based After School Program and summer program. Financial literary courses, a computer lab with assistance, and access to other community resources will also support residents. In addition to these classroom spaces, the development offers a community room, fitness center, lounge space, laundry room, and outdoor courtyard with a play structure overlooking beautiful views of the surrounding Bay Area neighborhoods.
